The Tallest Ice-cream Cone, 1st Grade

In this project we discussed the wonderful, Wayne Thiebaud. As soon as the students see it involves food, they are instantly hooked. By the end of the conversation that day, we were all craving a little mint-chocolate-chip (my favorite!). Today, the students finished their ice cream cones with watercolor. They first added sprinkles and such with oil pastels. I didn't know what to do in the background, so I decided to have them kept white for now. If something hits me, then we'll add to them. For now, I like the focus to be on the tall yummy stacks of ice cream.

I just love this. Isn't Wayne Thiebaud great for kids? The Whitney Museum hosted a terrific show of his work a few summers ago, which was a perfect time of year and really fun for everyone to see. Thanks for showing!

Thanks so much for sharing this project! My twins are in a 1st, 2nd grade combo class and this year, the 1/2 and kindergarten teachers asked me to help produce and teach art class each Friday. We used this as our first project and it was a hit!

This is a great project! And something all the students can relate to! I am in the middle of warm/cool colors so I am going to have the students make a pattern of warm and cool colors on their scoops. Thanks for posting.
