Start with a 9x12 piece of paper. Have the student write their name in the center. I prefer cursive.

Then, with a ruler draw a slanted line that goes THROUGH your name evenly.

On one side start with the 'echo' line or contour line, going around JUST that side. Keep going all the way out to the edges. Do the same thing on the other side, and match up the lines if you can.

Outline in sharpie.

Have the students pick three warm colors, and three cool colors...then color in a pattern. Warm on one side, cool on the other.

They love these and they are VERY simple to teach!Katie @ Loves of Lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07841348340467277988noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088939963430224841.post-57003821997694334952011-02-19T14:59:00.000-08:002011-02-19T14:59:38.922-08:00Falling back in Space Portraits! 3rd Grade*repost*

Here are some 'while working' shots that I grabbed because I love these! They are so fun. I got this idea from another teacher in my district last year where I taught. She said it was a huge hit among her 5th graders. Well, I decided to try it with 3rd and it worked.

1. Start with a LARGE sheet of paper...18x24 is what we used
2. Have students trace hands facing outward, towards the top of the paper. A friend may help.
3. Put papers on the ground, and have students trace their feet facing outward slightly towards the bottom of the paper. **they LOVE this part!**
4. Have students draw an oval/circle for the head slightly above the hands (in the middle)...add details to the face, hair, etc...to make it look like them
5. Then, add a neck, show them how to attach the arms to the hands, and the pants to the feet. The arms and legs get larger as they get closer to the tracings of hands and feet. Draw details, details, details!
6. Discuss how they are 'flying back in space' and WHERE ARE THEY?! I have students drawing outer space, under the ocean, in a lightening storm, in tornadoes, etc....
7. Outline in sharpies
8. Paint with watercolors (we added crayon detail for small things as a wax-resist)

My first graders are so much fun, and so much work :-) They have surprised me so much with these, they aren't even done, and they're BEAUTIFUL. They learned to "shade" a little, and mix their colors. If you look closely they have mixed some yellow into their orange pumpkins, to make them look further in the distance. Very, very cool so far. The finishing touches will add leaf rubbings. Fall fun, eh?
I really had NO idea how much they would love creating their own cartoon characters! I have a worksheet that a previous teacher left (looks like it was scanned from a book, maybe?) that has some ideas of eyes, noses, mouths, heads and bodies of characters. It helps to get the kids started. It had the prettiest butterfly on it, that was a very simple line drawing.

I decided to teach my 1st graders how to draw it (again, this year!), and then we added lots of different line designs using our sharpies of course.

The students were to color the butterfly with markers, trying to keep two of the same colors away from each other.

Then, we cut them out (with a "bubble" around it), and glued them on yellow paper. You may use whichever color you'd like-but yellow definitely pops for spring.

Next, we added a tissue paper border just for fun and to add texture.
The reason is due to the before and after effect these self-portraits have.

They are learning! I love it! The proof is there. See?

Lesson Procedures:

1. Give all students a "before" sheet. I make mine up on the computer and photocopy. Then, I label it, "Self Portrait drawn before instruction". I give each student a sharpie, and tell them to draw a picture of themselves.

They turn it in.

2. Hand out any size paper you want to have them do their self portraits on. The only thing I recommend you doing ahead of time is tracing their head's first. REASON BEING: If you have ever tried to get all 1st graders in a classroom to make something the same size--you know the chore that is. So, I cut out a little time and just did it myself. It's worth it, trust me.

3. Start with the facial features. Go through everything. They love to know all those little facts about where your eyes actually are, how far they are apart, where your ears should be, etc. Draw on the board as you teach. (They should be using pencil until you check it, and then we outlined with extra fine point sharpie!)

4. Continue on talking about different hair styles, etc...draw a few types on the board. At this point, you'll have to walk around and make sure they are all "getting it" and giving help for the more difficult hair styles :)

5. Continue on with the body. Talk about the body parts and things they typically used to forget when drawing their "old" people [I continually emphasize how good they'll be at people after this!], and how we DO indeed have necks, arms that flop down by our side and that don't stick out straight, fingers (and not dagger's!), etc.

6. Give them free reign to make them look like "them". I let them use markers to decorate their shirts and pants, shoes, etc.

Take everything STEPS. Trust me.

(Oh, and make sure you have multicultural crayons, too!)

This lesson may take a few weeks--but the results are worth it.

Just look at how far Mr. Blake has come:
(He was SO SO SO proud of himself! He kept saying, "I'm so good at drawing!")
Katie @ Loves of Lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07841348340467277988noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088939963430224841.post-75476997673758367972010-01-19T17:06:00.000-08:002010-01-19T17:10:50.973-08:00Cities using Rulers, 3rd Grade

I think I have an obsession with cityscapes. Either way, the kids don't seem to mind--because they LOVE drawing cities, too especially when I give them free reign of what type of buildings/companies/stores/restaurants can go into them.

This year, I incorporated ruler use, and had each student make a 3.5 " building and a 5" building. Anything like that to throw some math in the lesson is always a plus! I went around and "checked" the buildings to make sure they were accurate.

This time around, we used prismacolors for our cities, and watercolor for our sky. It takes ONE class and they look awesome.

2. It's simple, but the results are beautiful.

3. The kids think they're awesome and feel like mini-famous artists. They are always super impressed with their artwork!

~*~

Lesson Steps:

-Talk about Starry Night and Van Gogh a bit (have a print of Starry Night for easy viewing!)

-Give each student a 12 x18 black piece of paper (can use light blue or dark blue, too) and a pack of oil pastels

-Go through the steps of drawing the swirling, free-flowing details of Starry Night. No real rhyme or reason to it, just look at the painting to guide you along. (The kids should draw at their seats along with you...encourage overlapping the oil pastels to make different colors. They can also have free'er use of colors, too--so each look a bit different.)

[Note: I always start with the tree-like form on the bottom left, and then do the city/hills...then leave the sky for last!]

-NO PENCILS! Only oil pastels. This way, there is no such thing as "messing up".

Enjoy the beautiful results!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I really hope you are all getting off to a really great star this year. I know I am. My throat on the other hand, is not getting off to a great start. The first day of art class is always the MOST talking...and after a summer break, my vocal chords don't treat me well.

The kids seem to be excited for the year and off to a great start. My classroom(s) look fantastic, and as soon as I remember to bring my camera to school, I'll post some pictures.

It always takes a few weeks for me to show you new lessons--because, we have to DO them and it takes time. I'm sure you understand!

....but while you're waiting, Check out Deep Space Sparkle for some great ways to start off the year!

Also, if you're interested in starting a career in Elementary Education, it's never too late to start work on a degree!

Thanks for reading, and I'm hoping to bring you some new, exciting art projects this school year.

Happy Creating!Katie @ Loves of Lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07841348340467277988noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088939963430224841.post-62219468239823910682009-08-17T17:20:00.000-07:002009-08-18T05:22:05.211-07:00HotChalkI'm so excited for a new website that just opened for the teaching community. I'm stoked to be featured there as one of their art bloggers!

Go ahead and check it out...you can find other resources, too.

Happy beginning of the school year everyone...I hope that the summer got you refreshed and ready to begin another great year.

~KatieKatie @ Loves of Lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07841348340467277988noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088939963430224841.post-2831884822108192062009-08-05T13:26:00.000-07:002009-08-05T13:32:32.149-07:00Chinese Scroll Paintings, 4th-5th GradeI didn't have the chance to do this project this past year, but I did it the year before. It was a huge success, but it took a lot of time.

I started by teaching the kids about Chinese Scroll Paintings, and the history of them. I created a worksheet where they answered questions and had to sketch ideas for their designs.

The students worked on 12x24 white paper, to get the "scroll-like" feel. They lightly sketched their design using a pencil, and then were taught all about watercolor techniques. They were encouraged to do a lot of washes at first, and then go back when it was dry to add more dry brush details. They had to add chinese symbols using black ink as a finishing touch.

I finished them off by mounting a piece of thin, black paper at the top and bottom of the 'scrolls', and then hanging with yarn. The "oooo's and ahh's" of the hallway were endless.Katie @ Loves of Lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07841348340467277988noreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088939963430224841.post-35666952495403840102009-08-01T11:48:00.001-07:002009-08-01T11:53:55.041-07:003-dimensional pop out shapes, 3rd GradeThis is a great project to use a ruler, teach a little about 3-D and form.

Just start with a plain white piece of paper. Draw a center dot. Have them draw 3-5 shapes around the center dot. (I usually recommend circles, square, trianges, rectangles, hearts or diamonds)

Then, show them how to use a ruler and connect the edges of the shape to the center dot. Any edge that you lay your ruler down and it cuts through the shape means DON'T draw the line!

Once you show them on the board, they will fully understand.

You can add stripes and designs to your shapes like mine. We use marker to color them in. Then, have the students cut out the entire design and post onto a background colored paper that compliments the art piece.

This is a great one-day project, and they love the result...and so do I!Katie @ Loves of Lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07841348340467277988noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088939963430224841.post-81416760705552901512009-06-08T12:49:00.000-07:002009-06-08T13:05:23.949-07:00Tropical Fish, 3rd GradeFor this project, I give the students a photocopy, that have about 10 different small detailed pictures of various fish. They are to pick one that they like, and try to draw the basic shape of the fish on a 12x18 piece of black paper. Then, they may add whatever designs they'd like to their fish. It may be realistic, or abstract.

They use prismacolor colored pencils (which work marvelous on black paper!), and must press hard with them!
